What is this site about and how does it work?
A few years ago
Dr. William Maxwell mentioned to me that at any given time, there are 100 or so very important
concepts that should be taught to all students. The idea stuck in my head. I began to realize just how important and profound
the idea is. Many of these concepts are only taught at universities to graduate
students in the particular discipline that such a concept fits under. Dr.
Maxwell stated that many of these same concepts can be simplified and taught as
concepts to students at various levels of study – not just to domain experts. The idea of a
curriculum that includes these 100 (or so) concepts is tantalizing. This web
site will investigate what these 100 concepts might be.
How can you help?
- Create
a list of ten or twenty concepts that you think are important for
everyone to learn. Then take a look at those already submitted. If your
list differs from some or all of the previous submissions, please send
them to us by the contact page. Please state that you give us
permission to publish your submission on the web site and in any other
materials that may arise out of this work. (Guidelines: Each submission
should be a sentence or two. Long enough for others to understand what
you are suggesting, but short enough that it can be compared to other concepts. More details can be added in the forum.)
- Study the submission
and see if you can help to consolidate the list. Are there items that
can or should be combined? Are there items that should be edited or
restated. Visit the forums, register and make your submissions. (No
SPAM please. If you submit SPAM you will be blocked from further
submissions. If you wish to put in a relevant link please feel free,
but any such links should not be commercial in nature). If you are
making reference to a concept, please use the ID and a brief summary
of the concepts or skills you wish to discuss. Please keep discussions
friendly, academic and free of personal attacks. Any political, racial,
religious or other divisive bias will be edited out or removed.
- If
you are interested in the creation of a virtual university, please
contact us. We are actively investigating forming an on-line university
that will use the concept of 100 concepts as a large part of the
curriculum. It will also emphasize certain skills that are not normally
explicitly taught in schools. Again visit the forums for this
discussion.
- Lastly consider visiting Micro Steps and familiarizing yourself with its work. Consider making a donation.
